The tree's gone, but the stump is still sitting there — tripping people up, sprouting suckers, and getting in the way of your landscaping plans. So what do you do with it? You've got two options: stump grinding or full stump removal. Here's the difference and how to pick the right one.
The difference between grinding and removal
Stump grinding uses a machine to chip the stump down to several inches below ground level. The visible stump disappears, you're left with mulch you can use or haul away, and the roots are left in the soil to break down naturally over time.
Stump removal pulls the entire stump and the major root ball out of the ground. It's far more invasive — it leaves a large hole and disturbs a wide area — but it gets every bit of the stump and roots out.
Pros and cons of each
- Grinding is faster, cheaper, and less destructive to your yard. For the vast majority of homeowners, it's the right choice.
- Grinding leaves the roots to decompose, which is a non-issue for most yards but worth knowing if you're planting a new tree in the exact same spot.
- Full removal clears everything, which can matter for major construction, new hardscape, or pulling out an aggressive root system — but it costs more and tears up more ground.
What does it cost?
Stump grinding is usually priced by the size (diameter) of the stump and how many you have. A single stump is quick and affordable; a yard full of them is a bigger job. Full removal costs more because of the labor and the equipment needed to dig out the root ball. If you're already having a tree taken down, it's almost always cheaper to grind the stump in the same visit.
Which is right for you?
For most East Valley homeowners who just want the stump gone and the yard usable again, stump grinding is the clear winner — clean, fast, and budget-friendly. If you've got a special situation, we'll tell you straight whether full removal is worth it.
